A Malaysian woman working for a logistics company accepted her boss's offer for a transfer to China.

The overseas work opportunity turned out to be a nightmare when she ended up in Cambodia instead and was forced to work for a scam syndicate.

Thought it was a good opportunity

Speaking at a press conference organised by Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO), the woman's younger sister, Wang (transliteration), 30, told local media that her sister worked as an administrator for a logistics company, China Press wrote.

Her boss was a Chinese national.

Wang said that she suspected her sister's boss had offered her sister an internal transfer opportunity a few months back.

The guise was that the company would soon be shifting its operations back to China due to financial difficulties.

"My sister agreed and set off on Sep. 1. The company later said that they would need to make a flight transfer in Cambodia. My sister didn't suspect anything then," Wang said.

Helpless for 10 days

Her plight only came to light 10 days later when she managed to contact Wang and their family for help.

She told them that she had been trafficked to a scam compound in Cambodia.

"She was subjected to electric shocks for failing to meet scam targets. She reached out to us several times for help, but the phone call would always be interrupted," Wang shared.

Wang added that their family knew little about her sister's work and was also unsure of the company's name.

They were also unable to confirm if there were others who suffered the same plight.
