LTA confiscates another 4 vehicles in S'pore suspected of providing illegal ride-hailing services

The Land Transport Authority has confiscated another four vehicles suspected to have been used for illegal ride-hailing services in Singapore.

This was announced on Aug. 21 by Sun Xueling, who is senior minister of state for transport.

Photos showed enforcement officers approaching a vehicle at 4:20am at Changi Airport.

The vehicle then appeared to have been towed away.

Enforcement action carried out over 2 weeks

Sun wrote in her Facebook post that LTA has continued with its enforcement action against illegal ride-hailing over the past two weeks.

This was after feedback was provided by the National Private Hire Vehicles Association (NPHVA) and members of the public.

Enforcement action was carried out at Gardens By The Bay, Changi Airport and land checkpoints, Sun added.

The drivers of these vehicles will be charged with providing illegal ride-hailing services as they are unlicensed, she also wrote.

"The vehicles may also lack insurance protection for passengers," Sun noted.

Acknowledged need for travel options

The issue of providing travel options to Malaysia for commuters was also addressed, with Sun noting that discussions will be held with the "relevant parties" to meet these needs.

She wrote:

We have been systematically fine-tuning our mechanisms around enforcement. We recognise the need for consumers to have options to travel to Malaysia whether it is to visit family, do business or have a short holiday.

We will discuss with the relevant parties how these needs can be better met, while protecting the safety of passengers and the livelihood of drivers.
