A Russian national, who is a Singapore permanent resident, was sentenced to 10 days' jail on Jun. 6 after he pleaded guilty to causing hurt to a security officer in a lift in Marina Bay Sands (MBS).

Night of drinking

The accused, Konstantin Gavrilov, 45, had attended a corporate function event at Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 1 earlier that night on Nov. 29, 2023, Shin Min Daily News & CNA reported

He was employed as a risk manager then.

He had consumed about five 330ml glasses of beer at the event.

He was then invited to a drinking session at Ce La Vi, a restaurant and bar on the 57th floor of MBS.

Two people consumed a bottle of vodka there.

Subsequently, he headed to the basement of MBS where the club Avenue was located and continued drinking.

Disturbance

Before 4:51am on Nov. 30, 2023, he knocked into some club goers and was escorted out by a few security officers for the disturbance.

Three security officers led Gavrilov into a lift to escort him out.

A part-time security officer, 51, who was eventually assaulted in the lift, was one of them.

He had been working there for five years at that time.

Assault in lift caught on camera

An unknown woman who was at the club entered the lift as well.

While in the elevator, the victim held onto Gavrilov and told him to calm down.

Gavrilov appeared calm and so the security officer released him.

All of a sudden, Gavrilov swung his right arm and hit the officer in the face, which broke his spectacles.

The Russian then used his right arm to grab the victim's neck to put him in a chokehold, while dragging him around.

The security officer fell.

He felt dizzy and his face was numb at that point.

The other two officers tried to pull Gavrilov off the officer he was assaulting, but failed.

When the lift reached the first floor, an officer ran out to get help.

However, the other officer managed to pull Gavrilov off the victim.

Several officers arrived at the scene.

Some of them pinned Gavrilov to a wall, while another called the police.

Scuffle lasted 31 seconds

Police officers arrived at 5:50am and arrested Gavrilov.

They took him to the Police Cantonment Complex.

Gavrilov's blood sample showed it contained 204mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

Surveillance cameras in the elevator recorded the scuffle, which lasted about 31 seconds.

Compensated victim S$15

The victim did not seek medical attention.

Gavrilov compensated the victim S$15 for the cost of repairing his broken spectacles.

For causing hurt, he could be jailed five years or fined up to S$10,000, or both.
