'I go where I am needed most': Tan Wu Meng not running in Clementi ward in GE 2025
A different calling perhaps.
Jurong GRC MP Tan Wu Meng was not one of the candidates announced for the Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC on Apr. 15.
One of the candidates introduced during the session was new face David Hoe.
Hoe was also given a shout out by Tan on his Facebook post.
Tan said that he hoped Clementi residents would "give full support to his efforts, in the same way that so many folk have supported and encouraged my team and me over the past 10 years".Tan recently shared a video on what makes Clementi special, showcasing Clementi residents as "ordinary people, with extraordinary hearts".
"When we support our people, life up our people, love our people - we lift everyone up together," Tan said.
As for his future plans, Tan had this to say:"Where I will be going next? As I have shared with folk who ask: In life, I go where I am needed most. And I hope to be able to share more with all of you very soon."
Going or gone?
There are two broad ways this could go, Tan could either be moving to another GRC/SMC, or he might be retiring from politics.
Let's take a look at a possibly similar scenario.
Faishal Ibrahim will be competing in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC.
This marks a move from his current GRC, Nee Soon, which he has been in since 2011. Perhaps Tan, who has been in Jurong GRC since 2015, might be pulling a similar move?
Perhaps, but the execution of moves have been quite different for the two MPs. While Faishal made the announcement on Apr. 11, he had been seen with Marine Parade GRC anchor minister Tan See Leng in events since March.
Tan has not generally been seen walking the grounds in other constituencies.
And while Faishal could point to his roots in Marine Parade, he stood for his debut election in Marine Parade GRC back in 2006, Tan has always been in Jurong GRC.
So it doesn't appear that there would be a constituency that needs him more than the one he is currently in.
So perhaps a calling other than politics?
This move would echo Tan's reasons for retiring as an officeholder.
In a 2020 Facebook post, Tan stated that his "first love" was personally looking after patients and people, which was why he was requesting to return to patient care.
Perhaps that calling from a "first love" might lead to Tan's retirement not just from being an office holder, but from politics in general.
