Potato chip bags may often be full of air, but this man in Singapore is full of ideas.

While munching on some chips, Michael Collins realised how the packet felt "exactly like a float" because of how much air was inside.

"Which immediately made me think about whether I could make a boat out of them," he told Mothership.

And he did — albeit with some setbacks along the way.

S$60 worth of chips

Speaking to Mothership, Collins explained that he did some research and found that he needed a square base, around 80cm on each side, to create a float that could support him.

He bought various bags of chips, totaling around S$60, and brought them to Pasir Ris Park to assemble his boat.

"Well, amazingly, my calculations were pretty accurate, and it didn’t take too many packets of chips for me to float on," Collins said.

"But there was nothing holding these packets of chips together, which made them keep sliding off one another, causing me to constantly fall into the water."

He then used tape and cling wrap to perfect his float.

Before setting sail, his friend, Yihui, rented a kayak so he could follow Collins.

And off they went.

Mission success

Renting the kayak turned out to be a good decision.

While Collins managed to set sail on his handmade float, he found himself stuck in the same spot for quite a while.

To make matters worse, it started to rain.

Eventually, the two paddled to Pulau Ubin in the kayak, but Collins managed to make the last stretch with his float.

"One small step for man, one giant step for mankind," Collins cheered as he reached Pulau Ubin.

Not the last you’ll see of him

Reflecting on his past ideas, Collins said his adventures have been a "fun ride," and he expressed gratitude to those who have supported him.

"I have a couple more fun ideas that I’m really looking forward to working on next, and I hope that, in time, we’ll see more and more people celebrate being different and embrace their crazy, wacky ideas to make Singapore an even more fun place to live in."

He also documented his latest adventure on his YouTube channel and is pursuing content creation full-time since graduating from university.

Many interesting antics

This isn't Collins first "crazy" idea.

During Chinese New Year in 2024, he went viral after dancing around town in a dragon costume.

He also made headlines last year after suntanning the Singapore flag onto his chest for National Day.
