A passenger on an Air India flight from New Delhi to Bangkok reportedly urinated on another passenger.

This was apparently the second time in two-and-a-half years that a passenger has urinated on another passenger on board an Air India flight.

Perpetrator sat behind victim

The airline confirmed that the incident took place on Apr. 9 on the AI2336 flight in the business class section and it is investigating.

A 24-year-old Indian national, who was apparently intoxicated, reportedly urinated on a Japanese businessman as the plane was descending, according to India media.

The Indian national involved has been identified as Tushar Masand.

The Japanese passenger, described as a senior executive who is the managing director of Bridgestone India, appeared to have remained calm throughout the incident, despite looking visibly upset.

The Japanese man was reportedly seated directly in front of the perpetrator.

The incident caused a commotion in the cabin.

Cabin crew members provided towels and brought him to change his clothes in the washroom.

He apparently did not want to pursue the matter with the Thai authorities as he said he did not want to waste his time upon arrival.

The airline said the perpetrator repeatedly apologised to the affected passenger and was moved to another seat.

This was after another passenger raised strong objections following the incident.

The perpetrator was then moved from the business section to economy class and issued a verbal warning.

Banned from flying with Air India for 30 days

The airline notified India’s civil aviation regulator about the incident.

The perpetrator has been banned from flying with Air India for 30 days.

An independent committee would be formed to review the incident to decide if the passenger faces further action.

Similar incident

A similar incident occurred in November 2022.

A 72-year-old female victim was told to return to her seat, which was cleaned but still smelled of urine.

The culprit, identified as Shankar Mishra, left the airport without facing any action upon landing.

He was subsequently arrested.

The airline had made a police report only two months later when the victim filed a complaint.

The woman said the incident was “the most traumatic flight” ever.

Air India was fined three million Indian rupees (S$46,500) in 2023 for its handling of the incident.
