A major fire erupted in Paris, France, on Monday (Apr. 7) near a newly built court complex designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano.

Authorities urged the public to steer clear from the fire zone as the fire ripped through one of Paris's biggest recycling plants, French media France24. and Le Monde reported.

Around 200 firefighters and 60 fire trucks were deployed at the scene, and there were reportedly no victims, according to the fire brigade.

Authorities closed part of the main ring road around Paris to give fire-fighting vehicles access to the burning building.

Fire started underground

While firefighters arrived quickly, the fire started underground and spread throughout the building, mayor for the affected 17th district Geoffrey Boulard told French news broadcast BFM television.

About 31 employees were reportedly on site when the fire started.

The affected recycling plant started operating in 2019 and was designed to process household waste from approximately one million Paris residents, according to city authorities.

The major fire broke out nearly six years after fire ravaged the 850-year-old Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Apr. 15, 2019.
