West Coast, Jurong & Pasir Ris-Punggol GRCs dissolved due to population growth: EBRC report
Take note.
Three GRCs have been dissolved due to population growth in the areas concerned, according to the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC)'s report published Mar. 11.
The GRCs in question are West Coast, Jurong, and Pasir-Ris Punggol.
With the emergence of several new GRCs, this brings the total number of GRCs in the upcoming General Elections to 18.
Here's what's going to happen to them, and why.
Pasir Ris-Punggol
Pasir Ris-Punggol has seen the largest increase in the number of electors since the last General Election, said the report.
It is also expected to continue to grow with new housing developments.
As such, the Punggol estates in that GRC will be merged with Punggol West SMC, to form the new four-MP Punggol GRC.
The remaining polling districts in the now-former Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC will be merged with the adjacent polling districts of Loyang and Flora estates from East Coast GRC.
They will form the new four-MP Pasir Ris-Changi GRC.
West Coast and Jurong
Over at the west, West Coast GRC will become West Coast-Jurong West GRC, with five MPs.
This is because Hong Kah North SMC "has grown significantly and will continue to go rapidly in the coming years, due to new housing developments in Tengah and Bukit Batok West", said the report.
As it is now "too big to remain as an SMC", the Tengah estates from Hong Kah North will be absorbed into Choa Chu Kang.
The remaining area, concerning the Bukit Batok West estates, is "still too big and growing" and will be merged into Jurong GRC — which will be dissolved as a result — to form a new Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC.
Some polling districts will be carved into a new Jurong Central SMC, and other estates in Jurong West and Taman Jurong will be moved into the adjacent West Coast GRC.
Hence the dissolution of West Coast GRC, and the birth of West Coast-Jurong GRC.
