PM Wong makes surprise visit to official opening of Tengah Community Club
During his speech, PM Wong introduced himself as Tengah residents' "neighbour" from Marsiling-Yew Tee.
The new Tengah Community Club (CC) officially opened on Mar. 22, 2025.
According to a media release issued by the Hong Kah North constituency office, the CC will house a range of tenants, including food and beverage (F&B) outlets, enrichment centres, and a reading room, amongst others.
Tengah residents can access the CC via a link bridge from Plantation Plaza and the upcoming Tengah MRT station, which is part of the Jurong Region Line that will open in phases from 2027.
What to expect at Tengah CC
With the opening of Tengah CC, its management committee (CCMC) will be rolling out a series of family-oriented programmes and fitness classes, such as Jazzercise and Hatha Yoga.
Additionally, the CC will introduce a range of courses, including guitar, Taekwondo, K-PopX fitness, and Zumba.
To encourage participation, the Tengah CCMC will offer a 20 per cent discount for residents for initial enrolments.
Separately, the CC also comes with a community space that serves both as a reading room and an innovation hub, where residents of various age groups can share their stories and connect with each other.
Residents can also expect to receive "fresh, locally-grown produce from community gardens" under the Tengah CC's Community Gardening Group's "Garden Gives Back" programme.
Opening attended by several MPs
The opening of Tengah CC is officiated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade and Industry (MTI) Gan Kim Yong and Senior Minister of State (SMS) for Sustainability and the Environment & Transport Amy Khor.
Gan and Khor are, respectively, a Member of Parliament (MP) for Choa Chu Kang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and Hong Kah North Single-Member Constituency (SMC).
They were joined by Low Yen Ling, SMS for Culture, Community, and Youth and MTI, Mayor of South West District, and MP for Choa Chu Kang GRC.
Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim and Don Wee Boon Hong, both MPs for Choa Chu Kang GRC, attended the launch as well.
The appearances of these MPs may not come as a surprise for residents, as Tengah estate, which falls under Hong Kah North SMC in general election (GE) 2020, will be part of Chua Chu Kang GRC in GE2025, following changes in electoral boundaries.

Surprise visit by PM Wong
However, what was perhaps unexpected at the event was a surprise visit by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
During his speech, PM Wong introduced himself as Tengah residents' "neighbour" from the Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, where he serves as a MP.
Mothership understands that he was doing visiting in nearby estates and decided to drop by to meet the residents at Tengah.
PM Wong added that witnessing the opening of Tengah CC is "an exciting journey" for him, as he was the Minister for National Development when the ministry started planning for Tengah town in 2016.
He promised that the government will implement all its plans for the estate and that residents will see "more and more connectivity, amenities, and facilities" that will improve in the coming years.
Recalling a conversation he had with a couple from Tengah, PM Wong expressed his confidence in Tengah's development, just like Punggol:
"[They] said Tengah is like 'Punggol of the West'. If you have been to Punggol decades ago, people will say Punggol was very ulu [and] far away. Nobody wants to go.
But today, you look at Punggol, it is a beautiful town, connected, vibrant, with a lot of facilities there. Likewise, here in Tengah, today, you can see things already starting to take shape."

Community bonds will make Tengah special: PM Wong
Nevertheless, PM Wong emphasised that besides hardware and facilities, one important factor that makes an estate special is "the bond that residents have with one another".
As such, he encouraged residents to take part in activities, get to know their neighbours, serve the community, and work with grassroots leaders as well as different government agencies.
This strengthened sense of solidarity, unity, and partnership will not only make Tengah "a better town" but also help Singapore chart its way forward in today's turbulent world, added PM Wong.
