Most of us are fortunate enough to spend the Chinese New Year season having reunion meals with our loved ones.

One Singaporean, however, decided to share the festive joy with some migrant workers.

According to a post by the Ministry of Manpower, lawyer Stanley James Ng hosted a group of migrant workers to a special meal in his home.

The meal was on Jan. 12, just before the Chinese New Year period.

A space for them to feel appreciated

Speaking to Mothership, Ng said:

"For many of our migrant worker friends, home is many miles away, and they don’t always get to celebrate the way they would back home. I wanted to create a space where they could feel welcomed, appreciated, and part of something bigger - because in many ways, they are part of the community that makes Singapore home for all of us."

In the post, Ng — a member of Huang Clan Singapore Association — can be seen sharing a hearty spread including chicken rice, braised dishes and vegetables.

Ng said that the migrant workers were "a bit reserved" at first but gradually opened up.

"By the end, there was laughter, conversation, and a real sense of warmth. Some of them shared about their families back home, the things they miss, and how much this small gathering meant to them. It reminded me that sometimes, it’s not the big gestures, but the small acts of kindness that leave the biggest impact."

First but not the last time

While this was Ng's first time hosting the migrant workers, he said it definitely won't be the last: "Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working on various initiatives to support migrant workers, but inviting them into my home made it more personal. It was less about an event, and more about sharing a meal - one of the simplest yet most meaningful ways to connect."
