A fire broke out in a multi-storey car park at Block 712A Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 on Jan. 27 afternoon, causing damage to several vehicles.

The incident occurred just two days before Chinese New Year.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the fire at about 12:40pm.

SCDF personnel were seen extinguishing the blaze.

The fire involved two cars on the third level of the Housing and Development Board (HDB) public car park, SCDF said.

It was extinguished using two water jets and a compressed air foam backpack.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the cars involved were not electrical vehicles.

No injuries were reported.

Two days before CNY

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong wrote on Facebook that he was alerted to the fire that afternoon.

SM Lee, who is MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, informed residents that the car park was still open to the public except for the affected deck, which has since been closed.

“It is unfortunate that this happened just before CNY,” he added.

He encouraged affected vehicle owners to contact the HDB Branch Service Line during office hours or submit feedback to HDB and reminded residents to "stay alert and continue watching out for one another".

Affected car owner wanted to head to Malaysia

According to The Straits Times, one of the car owners affected said he had parked his vehicle around 12pm to run errands at a nearby bank

By the time he returned, the fire had spread too much to control.

The 40-year-old engineer and his wife watched as their Nissan Sylphy was towed away.

They had planned to drive to Malaysia to celebrate Chinese New Year with his wife's family.

Unfortunately, both his passport and laptop were in the car when the fire started.

Despite the loss, his 34-year-old Malaysian wife said she was relieved that they were physically safe.
