SIM student, 20, sends nudes of ex-gf to her brother for 'excitement', gets jail
He also harassed her for more nudes after they broke up.
To satisfy his sexual urges, a 20-year-old Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) student secretly filmed nude videos of his 19-year-old girlfriend over the course of five months without her consent.
After they broke up, he continued to harass her on social media, asking to see her naked, and eventually texted her nudes to her brother as he felt "excitement" doing so.
The identities of the man, now 23, and the victim cannot be disclosed due to a gag order.
Filmed nudes of girlfriend during online class
Court documents indicated that the man and the victim had been in a romantic relationship since November 2020.
The man first started filming intimate videos of her on Feb. 10, 2021. He was an SIM student at the time.
He was attending an online class at about 12:42pm from his bed at his aunt's house while the victim slept next to him.
As she was sleeping, the man lifted her shirt andĀ filmed two close-up videos of himself touching her intimate areas.
The man knew his girlfriend would not consent to this recording but did it anyway.
Convinced her to wear eye mask so he could take nudes
In April 2021, the man went to his girlfriend's hostel and the two had sex.
He convinced her to put on an eye mask and filmed her fully naked for more than four minutes with his mobile phone while he performed a sex act on her.
The man did this so that he could watch the video and pleasure himself on another occasion.
At one point, the victim, not knowing she was being filmed, wanted to take off the eye mask.
However, the man stopped her and kept recording.
Denied filming when caught in the act
The next month, after she invited him to her hostel, the man secretly recorded three videos of her showering over the toilet door.
He filmed three more videos on another such occasion in July 2021 so as to satiate his sexual urges.
On Jul. 16, 2021, the victim was sleeping on the sofa in her hostel, the man again filmed himself molesting her.
However, he was caught in the act when she woke up and spotted his phone pointing towards her.
When questioned, the man denied filming her and put his phone away. The victim took his word for it.
The two later broke up in 2022 for reasons unrelated to the offences.
Sent nudes to her brother after they broke up
But from July to August 2023, the man kept messaging her on Instagram, asking to see her breasts.
She refused and blocked him on all her social media platforms, but he kept making new accounts to contact her.
Once, when she ignored him, the man threatened to send his photographs of her to other persons, but the victim did not entertain his requests as she did not know he had taken nudes of her.
Subsequently, on Jan. 29, 2024, the man tried messaging his victim's brother to ask for "sexy photos" of his girlfriend instead.
When the victim's brother said he didn't have any, the man sent over three intimate pictures of the victim, some with her face visible.
He then invited the victim's brother to add him on Telegram to see nude pictures of the victim, and the latter complied.
Unbeknownst to the man, the victim's brother had already told the victim about their conversation and was helping her to fish out more information from him.
Later that day, the man sent over two more explicit nudes of the victim to her brother in the form of disappearing images.
Court documents stated that he did it as it gave him "excitement".
25 intimate videos found in his cloud account
By this time, the victim had already lodged a police report against the man.
He was arrested the next day, Jan. 30, 2024 at Pasir Laba Camp, where he was serving his National Service.
Police seized his mobile phone and found 25 intimate videos of the victim in his cloud backup account.
An Institute of Mental Health (IMH) report, dated Nov. 4, indicated that the man was diagnosed with voyeuristic disorder but noted that it did not contribute to his offending.
The victim said in a victim impact statement on Nov. 25 that she was "extremely traumatised" after finding out that her ex-boyfriend had secretly filmed her and was afraid her life and career would be ruined if people found out about her nudes.
The prosecution noted that she now uses a detector light to check for hidden cameras when she enters new rooms out of paranoia that she would be recorded again when undressing.
Accused abused trust of girlfriend in 'carefully calculated acts': Prosecution
The man pleaded guilty to six charges for filming and distributing voyeuristic videos on Dec. 26, with five others taken into consideration.
Asking for a sentence of 22 to 25 months' jail for the man, the prosecution described him as "a habitual voyeur" in their opening statement and argued that he had "abused the trust" of his girlfriend by recording intimate videos of her for his sexual gratification.
The prosecutor pointed out in court that the man repeatedly filmed his girlfriend in situations where he could evade detection, CNA reported.
His offences "cannot simply be chalked up to a moment of youthful folly" but were "carefully calculated acts", she said.
He wanted to have a look at the lady: Defence
The defence lawyer pleaded for the man to be given probation instead, highlighting his young age at the time of the offences.
"He wanted to have a look at the lady, and they were having a good relationship together in the beginning," the lawyer said, as reported by CNA.
The lawyer added that their relationship soured two years later, which "caused all these problems".
However, the judge responded that the voyeurism happened during the relationship, which allowed the man to get close to the victim and abuse her trust to film videos of her.
The judge decided that probation was not suitable for the man, given the victim's vulnerability and young age, the significant harm caused to her, and the severity and number of offences.
"Whatever may be said about his age at the time of the commission of the offences, she was even younger," he said of the victim.
The judge sentenced the man to 20 months in jail on Dec. 26.
