A person was seen riding a motorised wheelchair along the right-most lane of Bendemeer Road in the direction of Jalan Besar.

A video of the incident was put up on Facebook.

The rider, who appeared to be a man, was inching his way along the right-most lane in the day.

Traffic, which is known to be heavy along that stretch, could be seen slowing down as vehicles approaching the wheelchair rider from behind had to filter left and manoeuvre around it.

Close to 20 vehicles drove past the road in the span of 25 seconds, which was the length of the video.

The wheelchair rider would have approached a pedestrian crossing about 50m ahead, which is also where traffic would merge from the right.

The video cut off before showing where the rider went.

Not allowed on roads

Videos of personal mobility aid (PMA) users riding on the road have been circulating online in recent times.

Land Transport Authority (LTA) rules state that PMAs, such as wheelchairs, motorised wheelchairs or mobility scooters, are designed to carry only one individual, who is unable to walk or has difficulties walking.

These devices are not allowed on roads or to ferry passengers.

In December 2023, the Active Mobility Advisory Panel (AMAP) put forth a report to the Ministry of Transport (MOT) proposing to only allow individuals with certified walking difficulties or medical needs to use PMAs.

Users are currently not required to show proof of medical need prior to purchasing or using a PMA.
