The body of a Singaporean man who had gone missing near Mount Everest region was found on Oct. 4.

Harry Tan, 76, went missing on Sep. 26.

The discovery came after a search and rescue operation that lasted over a week, The Straits Times reported, citing friends of Tan.

The friends said they were told Tan had fallen off a cliff, and efforts to retrieve his body are ongoing.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) had said earlier that it was in close contact with Tan's family, and the local authorities in Nepal.

"MFA will continue to monitor developments and render consular support to the family," the spokesperson had added.

Mothership has reached out to MFA for updates.

Friends shocked

Friends of Tan expressed shock over the incident, saying this was likely his third trip to the Everest region.

“I’ve been in shock for the last nine days. I was hoping against hope; I thought if anyone could survive this, it was Harry," Raj Tamang, 58, who hiked to Everest Base Camp with Tan in 2019, told ST.

He added that Tan was a “dear friend” who took care of himself and was very fit for his age.

A Nanyang Technological University spokesperson said that they are "extremely saddened to hear about the passing".

"As a lecturer, Harry was a beloved teacher and mentor to many students and a supportive friend to his colleagues," they said.

Tan retired from NIE-NTU in 2010, and returned as a part-time lecturer from 2013 to 2020.

"The university extends its condolences to the family and is extending all possible support in their time of need."
