Malaysia's United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) party has paid the RM50 million fine (~S$15.8 million) imposed on former Prime Minister Najib Razak.
This was announced by the party's secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki in a Facebook post on Nov. 6.
In the post, Asyraf Wajdi said funds raised through the "Najib Razak Solidarity Fund", launched on Sep. 18, had reached the target and were "sufficient".
"UMNO has completed all payment processes to the Kuala Lumpur High Court this morning," he wrote.
The party has also closed the special account set up for public donations.
The payment was a condition of an order allowing Najib to serve the rest of his jail sentence under house arrest until Aug. 23, 2028, local media outlet The Star reported.
UMNO launched the fund to crowdfund the amount, as Najib’s personal and family assets remain frozen.
The 73-year-old was found guilty of corruption in the multibillion-dollar embezzlement of 1Malaysia Development Berhad, a state investment fund he co-founded.
