M'sia man caught sniffing female uni mate's shoe, gets arrested for stalking

A male university student in Malaysia suspected of stalking and harassing a fellow student has been arrested after CCTV footage allegedly captured him sniffing her shoe outside her house.

Local police said the suspect, who is in his 20s, was arrested on Jul. 13 after the victim lodged a police report, according to the New Straits Times (NST).

The victim, a 22-year-old university student, lodged the report on Jul. 12 at 3:55pm, NST reported.

The suspect was arrested a few hours later at 8:30pm.

Police also said the victim had reported being repeatedly harassed and followed by the suspect since April 2026.

The alleged incidents took place in both her residential area and her place of study.

CCTV footage

CCTV footage showed the alleged stalker loitering outside what is believed to be the victim's flat in Shah Alam, while appearing to look around the area.

After looking around, the suspect reached through a metal grille, seemingly took the victim's footwear, and sniffed it.

Arrested

"Initial checks found that [the suspect] has no prior criminal record and tested negative for drugs," Shah Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sarudin Samah said in a statement, reported the South China Morning Post.

The suspect was remanded for one day to assist with investigations.

According to Malaysia's Women's Aid Organisation (WAO), stalking is illegal under Section 507A of the country's Penal Code and is punishable by up to three years' imprisonment.
