Simonboy closes chicken rice business after 6 months, says 'F&B is really very hard'

Local influencer Simon Khung, better known by his nickname Simonboy, has shut down his chicken rice business.

A joint venture with Mediacorp actor Peter Yu, Singabola first made its debut at Yishun Industrial Park on Jun. 2, 2024.

Later in the year, its second outlet opened at Keat Hong Community Centre in Choa Chu Kang.

However, it seems sustaining this venture proved difficult — the stall ceased operations shortly after Christmas.

Reflecting on his time in the industry, the influencer-entrepreneur highlighted the difficulties of running an F&B business.

He said: "[F&B] is really very hard. Other than tough profit margin, we also [had a] hard time securing [a] stable chef with food quality control. I had a discussion with both my partner[s], Peter and Winson, and we agreed to close it and focus on our other hustles."

Nevertheless, Khung does not regret his initial decision to open the stall.

"Business is like this," he noted.

"It's either you succeed or fail. Fear of failing doesn't stop me from trying, because one day, I know I will succeed in [at least] one of [my ventures]."

In fact, the experience has only increased Khung's admiration for local F&B owners: "Everybody is really [making] a living and fighting very hard."

Plans for 2025

Moving forward, Khung has decided to pivot his focus back to the digital space.

Aside from marketing local brands through his social media platforms and presence, the influencer frequently hosts livestreams to promote and sell products.

Singabola's closure has also allowed Khung to dedicate more time to his other ventures.

These include a domestic helper agency he co-founded with his wife, as well as Spaced Out, an event space jointly produced with three other local influencers.

In addition, his salon at Far East Plaza, Heavenly Beauty, remains open for business.
