The police are investigating a student-organised protest that took place on Jan. 13 at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

The protest

According to the organisers, who call themselves "Students For Palestine Singapore", the event was staged to "mourn and honour" Palestine students who lost their lives in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, as well as protest against academic partnerships with Israeli institutions.

More than a hundred pairs of shoes were placed on the ground outside a research building in NUS.

In a statement on Jan. 13, the organisers demanded that local universities end partnerships with Israeli universities and companies linked to the Israeli military.

The organisers also objected to the "intense policing" that resulted from their activism, and demanded that the police stop their "surveillance and intimidation" of students.

Police will not grant permit for assemblies that have potential to stir emotions

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed that a report was lodged and investigations are ongoing.

The police also reminded the public that "organising or participating in a public assembly without a police permit in Singapore constitutes an offence under the Public Order Act 2009".

"The police will not grant any permit for assemblies that advocate political causes of other countries or foreign entities, or may have the potential to stir emotions and lead to public order incidents," SPF said.

Mothership has reached out to NUS for comment.
