Air pollution in Bangkok exceeds safe levels, public advised to mask up
Take note if you are there.
The air quality in 55 districts of Bangkok dropped to unhealthy levels on the morning of Jan. 6, 2025.
According to The Nation Thailand, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Air Quality Information Centre reported that the average PM2.5 level throughout the capital city of Thailand was 41.1 microgrammes per cubic metre (mcg) from 5am to 7am.
This is slightly above the average PM2.5 level of the country which stood at 37.5mcg for the same period.
PM2.5 refers to particulate matter that is up to 2.5 micrometres, or microns, in size, and is the most pervasive of air pollutants and the most harmful to human health.
Long term exposure to such pollutants has been linked to chronic diseases, including heart and lung problems.
According to the centre, a PM2.5 level of 37.6mcg and above is the point when air pollution could have an impact on human health.
Top three most polluted districts recorded PM 2.5 levels above 50mcg
The Nation Thailand further reported that the three most polluted districts in Bangkok recorded PM2.5 levels above 50mcg.
They were Nong Khaem with a PM 2.5 level of 53.8mcg, Chatuchak with 53.3mcg and Bangkok Noi with 52mcg.
The centre has since called on members of the public to put on face masks and to avoid staying outdoors for extended periods of time.
They should also keep a lookout for any symptoms such as cough, breathing difficulties, and eye irritation.
