Man, 19, slashes another man at Sembawang, asks friend to take photo of chopper & blood-stained shirt
He took the chopper from a eatery nearby before the assault.
After a fight broke out between his friends and another group of men in Sembawang at around 4am on Jun. 15, 2024, a 19-year-old Singaporean man took out a chopper.
The man, Jojoe Bin Johari, subsequently swung it at another man from the other group multiple times, causing blood to splatter around.
After both parties dispersed, Johari met up with two members of his group and asked one of them to take photos of him, the chopper, and the white shirt he wore during the fight, which was stained by blood.
Although Johari threw away the chopper and shirt after his friend took the photos, he was traced and arrested by the police four days later on Jun. 19.
Cause of fight
According to court documents seen by Mothership, the fight took place between two groups of friends at Block 446B Sembawang Drive on Jun. 15.
The groups comprised four male members each, all of whom were between the ages of 17 and 23 at the time.
Investigations revealed that sometime in June 2024, the victim became displeased with Johari's friend because he had sexual relations with the victim's girlfriend during a break in their relationship.
When the victim told his girlfriend that he would beat Johari's friend up if they met, she conveyed the message.
In response, Johari's friend called the victim at around midnight on Jun. 15, stating that he heard the victim "wanted to get people to beat him up".
The two men subsequently agreed to meet up at the Housing and Development Board (HDB) block to settle the issue "one to one".
Brought chopper & knife to fight
Despite their agreement, both the victim and Johari's friend summoned their friends for the settlement meeting.
Before Johari went to the HDB block, he went to an eatery at the estate and spotted a chopper on a table.
Johari took the chopper, concealed it beneath his shirt, and brought it with him to the meeting, along with a knife he obtained.
Asked friend to take photos
Later on, the two groups met on the ground floor near the HDB block, and a fight ensued where all members exchanged punches and kicks.
After Johari slashed the victim and blood began splattering around, the eight individuals dispersed.
Shortly after, Johari, who had taken off his shirt, met back up with his friend and another member of his group.
He then asked his friend to take a photo of him as he wanted to see how "rabak" he looked.
After his friend took photos of him, as well as his chopper and shirt, Johari threw the items away.
Following his arrest on Jun. 19, the police also recovered the knife Johari brought but did not use during the fight.
Victim sustained multiple injuries
After the fight ended, one of the victim's friends called the emergency hotline and sought medical assistance for the victim at around 4:10am on Jun. 15.
At the same time, the police were also alerted to the incident.
Upon arriving at the HDB block, police officers arrested two 17-year-olds and an 18-year-old for consorting with persons carrying offensive weapons in public places.
Paramedics attending the victim observed multiple lacerations on both of the victim's arms and a pool of blood where he was seated.
There was also a trail of blood in the area around the block.
The victim was subsequently conveyed conscious to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.
A doctor's report stated that he underwent multiple surgeries, including repair of his right little finger, ulnar nerve, and various muscles.
The victim was also given 16 days' hospitalisation leave from Jun. 15 to 30 for his injuries.
Other offences committed
Investigations into Johari also revealed that he had committed various offences before the Jun. 15 assault.
Sometime on or before May 23, Johari bought a BlueSG account, which was registered under another name, on the Telegram mobile application.
He then used the account to book a BlueSG car on May 23, even though he did not meet the age requirement to use the car-sharing service, which was 20 to 69 years old.
After getting the car, Johari, who did not hold a valid Class 3 driving licence, drove it around the vicinity of Canberra Road.
At around 11:44am, while negotiating a left bend along the slip road of Canberra Crescent into Canberra Street, Johari failed to maintain proper control of the car.
As a result, it veered to the right, mounted the centre divider kerb, and ended up on the opposite side of the road.
Although the car was damaged, Johari abandoned it immediately and left the scene without reporting the incident to BlueSG or the police within 24 hours.
Sentenced to reformative training in 2021
However, the next day, Johari committed another offence by omitting to report to a Singapore Prison Service integration officer by 4pm on May 24.
According to court documents, Johari was sentenced to reformative training in July 2021, and his sentence was scheduled to end in July 2025.
On Dec. 13, 2023, he was placed on the Release on Supervision programme pursuant to a supervision order.
Under the supervision order, Johari was legally bound to comply with reporting orders imposed on him by the integration officer.
However, he did not show up when the integration officer ordered him to report in person at Selarang Park Community Centre to explain why he had tampered with his electronic monitoring tag.
Pleaded guilty on Dec. 9
In total, Johari faced 17 charges, including voluntarily causing hurt by a dangerous weapon, affray, cheating by personation, and driving without a licence.
On Dec. 9, he was sentenced to a minimum of 12 months' reformative training at the Reformative Training Centre after admitting to his offences.
His driver's licence was also suspended for 18 months.
