Record 553,000 people cross S'pore-M'sia border on Dec. 13, heavy traffic expected till year end
Plan your travels accordingly.
Over 553,000 travellers crossed at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints between Singapore and Johor Bahru (JB) on Dec. 13, 2024.
In a media release, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said that the number surpassed the previous peak of 543,000 in September 2024.
This is also a 15 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Due to traffic tailback from Malaysia, car travellers who departed during peak periods had to wait up to three hours to clear immigration.
Heavy traffic expected
According to ICA, heavy traffic is expected to continue at both land checkpoints until the end of 2024 due to the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.
Travellers should factor in additional waiting time especially over the weekends, ICA said.
They may also consider taking the cross-border bus services and are advised to cooperate with ICA officers, observe traffic rules and maintain lane discipline.
"ICA will not hesitate to take stern action against travellers who do not comply with officers’ instructions and commit offences at the checkpoints," the authority added.
Travellers and motorists are also advised to take the following measures to ensure a smoother journey:
- Checking the traffic situation at the checkpoints beforehand via the OneMotoring website
- Using QR codes instead of passports for faster and more convenient immigration clearance
- Refrain from queue cutting as it can cause severe congestion and compromise the safety of other motorists
- Ensure that your vehicle’s Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) is valid/li>
