The sequel to local film "Number 1" is set to be released in cinemas during Chinese New Year 2025.

The announcement was made on Dec. 20, 2024, via an Instagram post.

The possibility of a sequel was hinted at the end of the first film, with a title card reading: “Number 2: Same Same But Different".

Returning team

Director Ong Kuo Sin returns to direct the sequel, with several original cast members, including Mark Lee, Jaspers Lai, Henry Thia, and Kiwebaby Chang, reprising their roles.

Lee will reprise his main lead role as Chow Chee Beng, a retrenched salaryman who unexpectedly becomes a drag queen.

Ong shared in an interview with Lianhe Zaobao that the sequel will explore the protagonist’s family dynamics and his evolving relationship with his now-grown son.

Upcoming Chinese New Year movies

Here are some movies to catch during Chinese New Year 2025:

Jack Neo’s upcoming film, "Ai Ping Cai Hui Ying" (tentative title), explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and the daily lives of Singaporeans.

The title is a play on the popular Hokkien song, "Ai Pia Cia Eh Yia".

The film stars local actors Henry Thia and Patricia Mok.

Meanwhile, "Baby Hero", an action-comedy, is set to release on Jan. 23, 2025.

The film is a joint production between Singapore’s Hong Pictures and Bangkok-based Hollywood Thailand.

"Baby Hero" marks the directorial debut of Wang Wei Liang, known for his role in the "Ah Boys to Men series".

The cast includes both Singaporean and Thai talents, such as Hayley Woo, Ya Hui, Wang Wei Liang, Long Lee and Vithaya Pansringarm.

The story follows Sun (played Long Lee), a village chef who invents a fantastical tale to escape his girlfriend, Leena (played Hayley Woo).

When Leena tracks him down, the pair must join forces to save their village from impending chaos.
