Durian-cation.
Durian lovers, listen up.
Singaporean filmmaker Jack Neo has been appointed Creative Director for an upcoming durian-themed hotel in Penang.
This marks his first venture into themed hospitality.
Hong Kong actress Amy Yip will also be part of the project as the hotel's non-executive Director.
Yip expressed that the project allows her to “support and celebrate durian culture in a meaningful way".
The hotel initiative will focus on celebrating the durian, which is an integral part of the culinary heritage of both Singapore and Malaysia.
Durian-themed hotel concept
The durian-themed hotel is designed to offer a unique experience for both local and international visitors.
Drawing on his experience as a filmmaker, Neo plans to integrate elements from his durian-focused film, "The King of Musang King", into the hotel’s design.
"The King of Musang King" is a 2023 Singaporean-Malaysian comedy film directed by Jack Neo, starring Mark Lee, Glenn Yong and Yeo Yann Yann.
Here are some of the hotel's highlights:
- Durian-inspired design
The hotel will feature a façade that resembles durian husks, alongside interior elements such as durian-themed walls and lighting.
- Durian culinary experience
The hotel’s restaurant will offer a variety of durian-based dishes, including durian hotpot, ice cream and coffee.
- Immersive activities
Guests can participate in activities such as guided durian farm tours and a durian culture exhibition, providing a deeper understanding of the fruit's cultural significance.
Revitalising Penang’s heritage
The hotel project also aims to rejuvenate Penang's heritage district by highlighting the city's multicultural charm and preserving its architectural legacy.
The durian-themed hotel is slated to open in late 2025.
