M'sia police seizes more than 21kg of wagyu beef worth over S$5,600 at Second Link
On the moove.
Malaysian police have seized more than 21kg of Japanese wagyu beef from a Malaysian car, entering the country from Singapore via the Tuas Second Link.
Don’t have a cow, man
The New Straits Times reports that the Johor Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS), said that the beef was found at around 11:40am on Dec. 20.
MAQIS officers were inspecting a Malaysian car entering from Singapore at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex at the Second Link.
During an inspection, MAQIS officers found three foam boxes, containing the wagyu beef in the back of the vehicle.
The beef was estimated to weigh about 21.4kg and had neither a veterinary health certificate nor halal certification.
A lot at steak
The beef was believed to have originated from Japan and was estimated to be worth around RM18,832 (S$5,663).
MAQIS officers also arrested the driver, a Malaysian man in his 40s.
If the man is convicted, he could face a RM100,000 fine (S$30,069), up to six years in prison, or both.
Pictures given to the Malaysian media by MAQIS showed three large foam boxes filled with meat.
The boxes appeared to have been sealed with tape, and the meat was packed on ice.
It does not appear that additional steps were taken to conceal the items.
