A passerby spotted lamp posts along Tanglin Road towards Orchard Road adorned with Christmas decorations on Oct. 2 afternoon, 85 days before Christmas.

A photo of the Yuletide decorations was uploaded to Facebook group Complaint Singapore at around 4pm.

In the photo, at least three lamp posts could be seen decorated with Christmas trees.

Blue and transparent Christmas baubles could also be seen dangling from trees on the side of the road.

In the comments section of the post, several commenters observed that Christmas was more than two months away.

Orchard Road Business Association statement

In response to Mothership's queries, an Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA) spokesman said its vendor starts installation works for Orchard Road Christmas Light-Up on Oct. 1 every year.

This is so that the vendor can complete the job by November and "in time for the Christmas Light-Up ceremony".

In 2023, the ceremony, which was officiated by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, took place on Nov. 16.

Starting early as installation is 'massive undertaking'

The spokesman shared that the installation work for Christmas Light-Up is "a massive undertaking" as it involves "putting up décor, lights, tree wraps, and other Christmas elements on hundreds of trees and lamp posts".

It also includes "hoisting cables over streets, from tree to tree, lamp post to lamp post" along the 3.1km-long stretch of Orchard Road.

According to him, the project requires "more than 100,000 hours of production and installation", and "much of the work has to be done late at night so as not to obstruct traffic or hinder businesses".

"The vendors also need to buffer for rainy nights when work has to stop for safety reasons," the statement read.

As a result, the preparations for the Orchard Road Christmas Light-Up may overlap with those of Deepavali Light-Up in Little India "at times", the spokesman added.
