Israel says it has killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah

UPDATE on Sep. 28 at 7:56pm: This article has been updated with a statement by Hezbollah on Nasrallah's death.

The Israeli military said on Sep. 28 that it had killed Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in an airstrike on the group's central headquarters.

Hezbollah confirmed on Sep. 28 that Nasrallah was killed, Reuters reported.

The group said in a statement it would continue its battle against Israel "in support of Gaza and Palestine, and in defence of Lebanon and its steadfast and honourable people".

The airstrike was conducted on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday, Sep. 27, Reuters reported.

Nasrallah has led Hezbollah for 32 years. Hezbollah has not issued a statement on the matter since the airstrike.

A source close to Hezbollah told Reuters that Nasrallah was not reachable as of Sep. 27 night.

Hours after the strikes on Sep. 28, sources close to Hezbollah told Reuters that Nasrallah was alive.

Israeli Army Spokesperson Avichay Adraee posted to X on Sep. 28 at about 4:16pm (Singapore time), saying that Nasrallah had been killed:

"Yesterday, the IDF killed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the terrorist organization Hezbollah and one of its founders," Adraee wrote.

Ali Karki, the Commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front, and other Hezbollah commanders, were also killed in the attack, he said.
