S’pore girl, 19, suffering from eczema & balding, finds a way to turn her life around
Another woman, 47, who also suffered from hair loss, could relate to the emotional and mental toll of the condition.

A 19-year-old girl in Singapore was suffering from hair loss issues so severe that people in school talked behind her back. Some assumed that she was suffering from cancer.
Olivia (not her real name), was, in fact, facing two medical issues that had nothing to do with cancer.
She has eczema and when she changed her medication for treating the condition, she found that her hair started to fall out in clumps.
This occurred around December 2023.
“At first I started to notice that my hair started falling out every time I brushed it,” she said.
“I asked my dad and he said it was normal. But after a while it was like all my hair just started falling off.”

The worst part?
She consulted her doctor about the possibility that the change in medication caused the severe hair loss, but there was no conclusive answer.
Olivia added that she has no family history of such extreme hair loss.
She was at a loss.
And this was after Olivia had already tried medical sprays and herbal creams bought off-the-counter without showing signs of improvement.
“Products from dermatologists didn’t really help,” Olivia admitted.
Traumatising experience
For a young person like her, the effects of sudden and severe loss of her hair was traumatising.
Olivia said: “I felt depressed and was very anxious. I wanted to go back to school, but I couldn’t.”
When she did return to school, she wore a cap, but this led to unsolicited remarks and questions about her looks.
“People were talking behind my back,” she said.
They also asked her what happened, but she could not give them any answers.
This took a toll on her social life.
She explained: “I didn’t really want to make friends and I didn’t want to bother anyone. I was mostly alone all the time or with my parents.”
Sought treatment
Olivia said she eventually sought help at Yun Nam Hair Care in January 2024 after she saw that the hair treatment business offered solutions for those suffering from hair loss issues.
There was an outlet in Northpoint City mall in Yishun, but Olivia did her due diligence before popping in.
She said her parents did the research on her behalf to find out what hair care treatment entailed and what other solutions or treatment centres existed in Singapore.
Consultants shocked at first
Olivia’s first consultation at Yun Nam Hair Care turned out to be an eye-opener.
She recalled that the consultants were “a bit shocked” at first by the extent of her balding, but they got down to diagnosis.
Olivia understood that she had a dry scalp and unhealthy hair follicles following a hair scan.
Assessing her scalp condition and treating her were the first step.
The use of herbs that were not harsh and suitable for her were encouraging signs for her.
Along the way, the Yun Nam Hair Care consultants had to make sure Olivia was feeling alright and comfortable.
They even moved her into a private room when they noticed she was anxious around others.
The consultant also gave snacks and toys to Olivia to comfort her during treatments.
The most important thing for Olivia was the consultants’ ability to offer more than their expertise.
She said: “They make me feel comfortable.”
Results within a few weeks
The discomfort and anxiety paid off though.
“Only after a few weeks, I could see the hair growing back,” Olivia said. “After two to three months, I could see new baby hair growing,”
The best part was that her hair has grown back fully and she did not even appear to have had a balding problem.

Visible improvement to her hair loss issue has boosted her confidence, which was aided by the thoughtfulness of the Yun Nam Hair Care consultants.
Olivia added that a consultant in particular would offer her advice, such as telling her to regularly clean the hat she wore to prevent dirt and bacteria build-up.
Dealing with long-term hair loss
Similar to Olivia’s case that had shown positive results, others who are suffering from long-term hair loss have also turned to Yun Nam Hair Care for help.
Harti (not her real name), a 47-year-old homemaker and mother of one, has been going to Yun Nam Hair Care for more than 10 years to cope with alopecia areata - a type of alopecia that causes hair fall of the scalp or other parts of the body, often resulting in patches of baldness.

In the past decade, she has had two episodes of alopecia, and has sought help for it.
Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that leads to hair loss, and there is currently no cure for it. The condition can only be managed by treatments that stimulate hair growth.
Harti said she developed alopecia in her mid-30s, which coincided with a period of time she had to take care of her ill-stricken father.
“I was taking care of him, so it was very stressful,” she said.
Unlike Olivia, who experienced baldness on her entire scalp, Harti’s hair loss was concentrated on the back of her head.
Even though it was not the first thing people noticed about her, it still made her self-conscious.
She admitted that it made her feel “a little depressed” and even ashamed.
Decided on Yun Nam Hair Care after reading reviews
Harti decided to take action and find a solution after reading online reviews about undergoing hair treatment and found recommendations for Yun Nam Hair Care.
However, as she was still sceptical her hair issues could be fixed, she showed up with low expectations.
Harti said: “I didn’t expect much after the very first session, but of course, I was hoping it would grow back. But after a few sessions, I could see a difference, so I’m satisfied.”
The biggest tell-tale sign that treatment was working?
“I could see baby hair grow after treatment,” she said.

As alopecia is a long-term condition, Harti had to seek help on more than one occasion.
She said that she has continued with Yun Nam for hair treatments as they have been effective for her, and there is trust and rapport with its staff.
“So, the consultant will always try to find a solution for me and they take good care of my hair,” she added, saying that her consultant has been very helpful over the years, having known Harti for a long time.
