President Tharman to visit India from Jan. 14 to 18, celebrating 60 years of S'pore-India ties

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will be in India for four days from Jan. 14 to 18, 2025.

According to a press release on Jan. 13 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), he will be making a state visit at the invitation of India President, Droupadi Murmu.

He will also meet India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several ministers and overseas Singaporeans in New Delhi.

President Tharman will be in New Delhi from Jan. 15 to 16, and Odisha from Jan. 17 to 18.

His visit marks the 60th anniversary of Singapore-India diplomatic relations.

During his visit, President Tharman will receive a ceremonial welcome at the Presidential Palace of Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he will meet Murmu.

He will also be hosted to a state banquet by Murmu and meet Modi, along with other Indian ministers.

President Tharman will also visit the Raj Ghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

To meet overseas Singaporeans to celebrate SG60

While in Delhi, President Tharman will be meeting with overseas Singaporeans as part of celebrations for the 60th anniversary of Singapore-India diplomatic relations and Singapore's 60th year of independence (SG60).

He is also expected to engage with Indian thought leaders in a closed-door roundtable session.

Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, will host President Tharman to an official dinner and also discuss with him on Odisha's economic strategies and opportunities.

President Tharman's other activities include visiting the World Skills Centre, set up by Singapore's Institute of Technical Education Education Services (ITEES) with funding from the Asian Development Bank, a vaccine manufacturing plant run by Bharat Biotech, and other places demonstrating the state's cultural heritage.

On his trip, he will be accompanied by his wife, Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, as well as several political office-holders, government officials and business leaders.

This includes:

  • Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance Chee Hong Tat
  • Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and National Development Sim Ann
  • Members of Parliament Lim Biow Chuan, Joan Pereira and Wan Rizal
  • Officials from President’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Enterprise Singapore
  • A business delegation
