Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared assets worth nearly S$550 million.

Over S$549 million

Thai prime ministers are required to declare their assets to Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

Paetongtarn, 38, did so after becoming the 31st prime minister of Thailand in September 2024, replacing Sretha Thavisin, who was removed by the constitutional court the month prior.

The Bangkok Post reported that Paetongtarn and her husband Pitaka Suksawat declared a combined 13.9 billion baht (S$551.8 million).

Of this, Paetongtarn declared the lion’s share at 13.84 billion baht (S$549.4 million), and Pitaka declared 141.11 million (S$5.6 million).

Their children reportedly hold half a million baht (S$19,900) worth of assets.

The assets were broken down into various categories, including cash, investments, plots of land, properties and vehicles.

Accurate declaration

The NACC declaration, which was confirmed by Paetongtarn’s Pheu Thai Party as accurate, showed that she had about 7.27 million baht (S$288,643) in cash, as well as an annual income of 265 million baht (S$10.5 million).

Also notable was about 724.92 million baht (S$28.8 million) worth of land plots, including three in the Pathun Thani district of Thailand, just north of Bangkok, and two in Hokkaido, Japan.

She also owns two rental properties in London, valued at 208.34 million baht (S$8.2 million) and 111.61 million baht (S$4.4 million).

This is in addition to homes in Bangkok and Nonthaburi, and five condominiums in the Thai capital.

She also reported a wealth of luxury vehicles and items, the most hefty being a 10.6 million baht (S$429,000) Bentley and a Rolls-Royce Phantom worth 6.7 million baht (S$266,000).

Added to this were a stash of gold bars worth 3 million baht (S$119,000), 217 luxury bags worth 76.5 million baht (S$3.04 million), 75 luxury watches worth 162 million baht (S$6.4 million), and nine Bearbrick collectable figures worth 1.9 million baht (S$75,400).

Salary as PM

This wealth is unsurprising, considering her father and former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was one of Thailand’s wealthiest men, with his fortune valued at US$2.1 billion (S$2.8 billion).

It is also not new for a Thai PM to have immense private wealth.

Paetongtarn’s predecessor Srettha Tavisin was a real-estate billionaire.

But it is in stark contrast to the salary allocated to Thai prime ministers, reported by the Bangkok Post in 2023 as 125,590 baht (S$4,986) a month.
