PUB warns of possible flash floods from Jan. 10 to 13 due to incoming monsoon surge
Warning.
On Jan. 9, national water agency PUB issued an alert stating that a monsoon surge is expected to bring rainy and windy conditions to Singapore from Jan. 10 to Jan. 13
As such, heavy downpours could temporarily overwhelm canals and drains, leading to flash floods, PUB said on Facebook.
Residents in flood-prone areas or hotspots are advised to stay informed and be prepared for potential flash floods.
Daily minimum temperatures may drop to around 22°C in some areas of Singapore, the National Environment Agency (NEA) noted on Facebook.
What is a monsoon surge
According to NEA, a monsoon surge refers to a strengthening of winds over the South China Sea, causing extensive rainclouds to form over our surrounding region.
People can expect spells of moderate to heavy thundery rain with cool and windy conditions during this period.
Overall, rainfall for the first half of January 2025 is expected to be above average across most areas of the island, NEA said.
What to do when there is a flood
PUB advised residents to stay informed about heavy rain and flood risk warnings by subscribing to PUB flood alerts via the MyENV app or the PUB Flood Alerts Telegram channel.
The agency also encouraged the public to familiarise themselves with flood preparedness measures and avoid areas prone to flooding during this time.
