LTA condemns 'anti-social behaviour' of man who peed on Outram Park MRT station escalator
Operators SBS Transit and SMRT worked together, enabling the police to identify and arrest the culprit quickly.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) issued a statement on Jan. 12 condemning the actions of a man who allegedly relieved himself on an escalator at Outram Park MRT station.
The act, which was witnessed by passers-by and caught on video, allegedly occurred at around 10pm on Jan. 10.
Operators worked together
LTA said on Jan. 12 that rail operators SMRT and SBS Transit worked together to handle the case.
A member of the public reported the incident to Outram Park station staff on the SMRT-run Thomson-East Coast Line, suggesting that they should use the CCTV system to identify the culprit.
Since CCTV cameras at the incident area belong to SBS Transit, SMRT immediately alerted the former.
The LTA said this collaboration between the operators enabled the police to identify and arrest the offender quickly.
The authority also condemned the "unacceptable" actions of the culprit, adding that they will work with the police to push for the maximum possible penalty against him:
"LTA and the transport operators strongly condemn such anti-social behaviour, which not only deface public spaces but also pose health and sanitation concerns for commuters."
Arrested for public nuisance
The police confirmed on Jan. 12 that the man has been arrested for public nuisance.
Under the Penal Code, an offence of public nuisance carries a fine of up to S$2,000 and potentially an imprisonment term of up to three months.
