A woman was seated with her family at an eatery in Malaysia when she saw a familiar-looking cat approach her.
The cat had a striking resemblance to the one she had lost more than two years ago.
"Why does your face look like my cat?" she asked the stray, who was a regular in the area and known to the locals there.
Despite its scruffy complexion and the scar across its nose, the cat bore the same adorable orange eyes as her own.
It was only when she saw his tail, which was bent distinctively, that she realised the miraculousness of their encounter:
The woman then called out his name, Jerry, and was deeply moved when the cat appeared to recognise her and her family.
And just like that, after two whole years of life on the streets and surviving on scraps from the eatery, Jerry found his home again.
A heartfelt reunion
A video of the heartfelt reunion was uploaded to TikTok on Dec. 13, 2024, by user @podedoshh.
The video shows Jerry next to a photo of himself on a smartphone taken when he was still with the owner.
@podedoshh“hi meow, kenapa muka kau mcm kucing rumah aku” lepastu tengok ekor…. rupanya kucing aku yang suda bertahun hilang dan jumpa di kedai makan . dia masih tau nama dia Jerry 🥹💔 sudahla dia jenis soft mesti kena cakar oleh kucing lain hm (suda bawa balik rumah)♬ original sound - Naim Daniel
A soft type
According to the video caption, Jerry is a "soft type", and the demure kitty might have been clawed by another cat on the streets, leading to the scar on his nose.
A follow-up video on Dec. 14 shows Jerry being brought back home after his two-year odyssey.
While Jerry looks happy and loved back in his old home, heartbreaking glimpses of his street life can be seen.
At one point in the video, Jerry can be seen drinking rainwater, which could have been a habit he developed while searching for water in the streets as a stray:
Lost after Movement Control Order period
The woman told Weirdkaya that Jerry had been lost when the family moved to a new, renovated house following the movement control order (MCO) lifted on Dec. 31, 2021. The new house was just next door to their previous home.
The MCO was a national quarantine measure imposed in 2020 across Malaysia to combat the spread of Covid-19.
The woman believes that Jerry might not have been able to recognise the scent of the new house, and might have thought he was abandoned.
The family tried their best to search for Jerry throughout their neighbourhood, calling out his name every day to no avail.
They were also anxious and worried about his safety, especially given there were stray dogs in the area.
Jerry, meanwhile, had been living off scraps at the eatery, where he would eventually be found and reunited with his owners two years later.
Owner thanks those who fed Jerry
The woman thanked those who might have fed Jerry during his time as a stray, according to Weirdkaya.
“Thank you so much to everyone who helped Jerry by giving him food. May you be blessed with abundance,” she said.
She told Weirdkaya:
“I pray that everyone who has lost their pet will one day be reunited with them. I hope you protect your pets from hunger and hardships because every meeting and separation with a beloved pet is only known by God.
And if you see a stray pet, please give them some food, even if it’s just a little, because they could be a lost pet who had an owner but lost their way.”
