Temperatures in Singapore continued to fall to as low as 21.6°C on the morning of Jan. 11, largely due to the monsoon surge.
Newton, which is in the southern central region, experienced the lowest temperature of 21.8 °C at about 8:30am.
It then dipped to 21.6°C at 8:45am.
Choa Chu Kang recorded the second lowest temperature at 22°C.
As of 8:27am, the east side of Singapore experienced the highest temperatures, with Pasir Ris and the East Coast at 23.2°C this morning.
Temperatures also generally hovered around 22°C around the central catchment area, located near large water bodies such as the MacRitchie Reservoir, Lower Peirce Reservoir and Upper Peirce Reservoir parks.
Temperatures are not expected to exceed 26°C on Saturday.
Monsoon surge expected to last till Monday
The Northeast Monsoon surge occurs due a strengthening and shifting of the low-level, north-easterly winds over the surrounding region of Singapore and South China Sea towards the equator, explained Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS).
Each surge usually lasts between two to three days per episode.
On Jan. 9, national water agency PUB issued an alert that a monsoon surge is expected to bring rainy and windy conditions to Singapore from Friday to Monday, Jan. 10 to 13.
MSS has likewise issued a similar advisory on its website, stating that "widespread continuous rain, heavy at times and with thunder" are to be expected.
Heavy rain warnings and the latest weather forecast can be found on the MSS website.
