An Indonesian tourist was seriously injured after allegedly being struck by a car while going for a morning jog along Orchard Road, on Dec. 17, 2024.

Nearly a month later, Elsye Wijaya, 45, is still in a coma as a result of the hit-and-run.

Her husband, Sing Wiryawan, 45, who flew into Singapore upon hearing of the accident, is still searching for answers as to what happened, and who might be responsible.

A friend of the family reached out to Mothership, and said Wiryawan has been in Singapore for a month.

The friend said Wiryawan is "anxiously waiting for [Wijaya's] recovery, as she remains in a coma".

Police investigations are ongoing, and the family has come forward to share their story in hopes of gathering more evidence.

Athlete and racer, "quite familiar" with Singapore

Wijaya came to Singapore with her oldest son on Dec. 15, 2024 and checked in to the Hilton Singapore Orchard hotel.

Wijaya and Wiryawan have three children, two sons and one daughter.

Wijaya had come to Singapore for a routine mammogram and check-up at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Wiryawan explained.

The couple are familiar with Singapore and have visited multiple times with family and friends.

Wijaya is also a seasoned athlete, having participated in various sporting events internationally.

The couple have also participated in various triathlons and cycling races in Singapore.

Alleged hit-and-run

On Dec. 17, 2024, Wijaya went out on her own for a morning jog along Orchard Road, at about 6:30am.

Wiryawan said that he had a quick chat with his wife before she left the hotel for her run.

According to him, Wijaya was hit by a car at the junction of Orchard Road and Grange Road during her morning jog.

A passerby discovered Wijaya unconscious and bleeding profusely from her mouth and the back of her head.

The passerby then immediately called for an ambulance.

Wijaya was conveyed to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH).

At about 6:55am, Wiryawan received a call from his wife's mobile phone, made by the passerby, and was informed that his wife was hurt in a hit-and-run.

Wiryawan boarded a flight to Singapore that very same day.

Husband looking for answers

Due to the severity of her injuries, doctors at SGH performed an emergency procedure to open the back of Wijaya's skull and drain the blood.

Wijaya remains in a coma at SGH to this day and has been admitted to the neurosurgical intensive care unit.

A Dec. 29, 2024 doctor's memo seen by Mothership states that she "suffered serious injuries and is currently in a critical condition".

Wiryawan, who has been at Wijaya's side in Singapore, is looking for clarity as to what happened to his wife.

Investigations ongoing

According to a document seen by Mothership, as of Dec. 30, 2024, traffic police shared that they are investigating the accident.

Police also shared that they will update the family on the status of the investigation in due course.

The Investigating Officer handling the case also requested the family for any further information or video footage, including CCTV recordings, related to the accident.

Wiryawan said that he has since received updates from the police about the car that might have been involved in the accident.

All the same, the family is looking for more evidence to find out what exactly happened.

Members of the public with any information or footage of the incident can reach out to Wiryawan via email.
