We’ve all seen many chickens roaming around Singapore, but it’s not every day you'll get to chance upon its eggs.
Well, Gary Tng and his colleagues have had the rare opportunity to witness a mother hen growing her family right outside their office in the Central Business District.
Sharing a series of photos via Facebook to the Singapore Wildlife Sightings page on Dec. 26, Tng documented the daily addition to the hen's nest.
Speaking to Mothership, Tng said that a total of 10 eggs were laid over 10 days — one per day.
Enough to "fill a whole tray," joked Tng.
Interestingly, the hen had chosen to lay its eggs near an air con compressor, plausibly to provide additional warmth for its eggs.
“We don’t head down to check daily, but the location is right at the entrance of the office,” said Tng, adding that they were collectively “surprised and excited” by the discovery.
The hen was rather “protective" over its eggs, said Tng, adding that there was no human interference.
Tng also managed to spot the rooster-father nearby.
“Guess this is the culprit”, Tng quipped.
Kampong Chicken? No, City Chicken.
Many netizens were charmed to see Tng's find and quipped that Singapore's kampong chickens — free-roaming village chickens — have since adapted to city life and turned into "city" chickens.
Others encouraged Tng to leave the eggs undisturbed to let them hatch naturally, while others expressed their concern that other predators, such as snakes and monitor lizards, would eat them.
Acknowledging that the chickens are "wild" and free-roaming, Tng assured netizens that he would leave them alone to hatch.
