Hammer attack at a Tokyo university leaves at least 8 injured; woman, 22, apprehended by police

A young university student in western Tokyo, Japan attacked her classmates with a hammer earlier today on Jan. 10, leaving at least eight others injured.

The attack, which occurred at Hosei University's Tama Campus in the afternoon, has left some victims with wounds to their head, reported NDTV.

Attacked out of frustration from being ignored

Local police had received first received reports of a student "wielding a hammer" and striking students during class at approximately 3:50pm, wrote The Asahi Shimbun.

The assailant is reportedly a 22-year-old female student studying sociology at the university, said The Asahi Shimbun.

She was stopped by university staff and has since been apprehended by local police.

The suspect had allegedly told investigators that she had simply done so out of pent-up frustration from being ignored, said NDTV.

Investigations are currently ongoing.
