Girl, 15, took her own life in 2023 after falling into depression, MOE says school was 'fully aware' & had intervened
"MOE takes a serious view of any form of hurtful behaviour," the spokesperson said.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) has come forward to address a post by the mother of a secondary school student.
On Jan. 8, the mother had shared an account of how her daughter was bullied by schoolmates, and fell into depression after.
She said her daughter, at the age of less than 16, took her own life in 2023.
Her daughter was from Admiralty Secondary School, the same school where a 12-year-old boy suffered a deep cut from being repeatedly hit on the head by his classmate with a water bottle on Jan. 7.
The mother called for the school's handling of bullying cases to be reviewed.
In response to Mothership's queries, an MOE spokesperson said the ministry is "deeply saddened" by the loss of its student in 2023 and extended its condolences to her family and loved ones.
MOE: Causes and possible triggers for suicides 'complex & multifaceted'
The spokesperson said the school was "fully aware of the situation" and had "intervened, extended counselling and facilitated conversations among the schoolmates".
The spokesperson said:
"The causes and possible triggers for suicides are complex and multifaceted. Our school leaders would always seek to extend all possible help to affected students and families, and work closely and sensitively with families in managing their grief."
The spokesperson also called for the public and media to refrain from "any speculation and doxxing of parties" in connection with the situation.
MOE takes a "serious view" of hurtful behaviour
"MOE takes a serious view of any form of hurtful behaviour," the spokesperson said, adding:
"For cases arising from careless remarks and misunderstandings, schools take action to guide students to resolve their differences and to reconcile."
Disciplinary actions are also taken "in addition to restorative action", when it comes to cases of intentional bullying.
