A Chinese female streamer's appearance at an awards ceremony left the gaming and streaming community scratching their heads as she apparently looked different in real life as compared to her profile photo.

You Chong (幼宠), whose name means "Youthful Pet" or "Young Pet", is a gamer-turned-influencer who gained popularity in the industry due to her competitive gaming and engaging commentary skills.

Attended awards show in person

On Jan. 19, she attended a "2024 QQ Speed Night" awards ceremony in Taicang, Jiangsu province, China, after she won the Top 12 Most Popular Streamer Award.

She addressed the crowd briefly while on stage.

The event was streamed live.

Looks different IRL

Prior to this event, many came to know of the You Chong personality via her lively voice commentary during livestreams, as well as watching screen recordings of her captivating gameplay.

Those familiar with her account would have seen her profile picture.

In a video uploaded on Douyin, You Chong could be seen hurriedly thanking the organisers before leaving.

This was when commenters chimed in on her appearance.

While many expressed doubt if this was the same person, others said they would continue to support her as she was good at what she does and it is not often female gamers get recognised and praised for their skills.

"Who posted me on the internet?"

The clip of her appearance was subsequently circulated online and was picked up by Chinese news outlets.

The coverage, which was deemed unkind, drew a response from You Chong.

She asked in an audio clip who was it who posted the photo of her on the internet.

She sarcastically commented that the commenters must "think they're so smart", and retorted, "You can say what you want, I don't care."

Her profile caption now reads, "I looked like this in 2023, can I change that much?"

You Chong also referred to an old photo of her (person on far right) as proof that she had always looked similar.

Some of the articles in Chinese, such as this one, were subsequently made inaccessible.

The article, which can no longer be accessed, claimed in its headline that the gamer "lost 50 pounds after removing the filter".

It was apparently made inaccessible following backlash to the judgmental takes on You Chong's appearance.

Compilation video

A compilation video of You Chong appeared on YouTube on Jan. 4, showing You Chong in real life at a gaming competition.

The compiled clips were to showcase the various available media featuring You Chong.

In response to the video, one commenter wrote: "Please respect this lady."

At the 16-minute 45-second mark of the YouTube video, she appeared to be shielding her face from the glare of the spotlight during a gaming competition.

The awards segment appeared at the 13-minute 13-second mark.

A photo of her profile picture could be seen flashed on the screen on stage as the awardees gathered in a row.
