Every year, one creative Bedok resident decks out the corridor outside her Housing Development Board (HDB) flat in Bedok Reservoir with Chinese New Year decorations.

And this year is no different.

Speaking to Mothership, Linda (who only wanted to be known by her first name) shared that she faced a slight challenge as with many rainy days, she only began decorating later than usual.

But she got it done in the end.

This year, Linda decided to make some decorations by hand.

She hung them up along the lift landing and corridor to add a festive cheer.

"Wishing everyone a happy Chinese New Year," Linda said.

Neighbours love it

Linda said many people are excited about her decorations and would ask about them.

In 2024, Linda shared with Mothership that her neighbours, who are Malay Muslim, are big fans of her decorations and would look forward to them every year.

Her neighbours would take photos and videos to share with others, and they would also help clean and wash the corridor before she started decorating.

In 2019, Linda said that she always sought permission from her neighbours before using certain decorations.

For instance, she only uses cartoon illustrations of animals instead of real-life ones as she understands that some animals, particularly dogs and pigs, may be insensitive to her Muslim neighbours.

In 2021, Linda explained that she genuinely enjoyed the process of decorating and felt heartened knowing that everyone around her also appreciated her efforts.

She recalled a memorable incident from 2017, where an Indian man travelled all the way from Jurong to her flat in Bedok just to admire the decorations.
