Albert Centre Market & Food Centre in Bugis will be closed for renovation works for three months from Feb. 5 to May 4, 2025.

Located at Block 270 Queen Street, the centre is one of the earliest cooked food centres in Singapore.

It comprises 86 food stalls and 148 market stalls and serves the community in its vicinity, including the few blocks of public housing residents, as well as devotees who visit the places of worship along Waterloo Street.

Banners put up in the hawker centre announced the impending renovation works.

Fortuitous timing

Hawkers interviewed by Shin Min Daily News said they were heartened that the centre will be closed after the peak Chinese New Year period.

Chinese New Year falls on Jan. 29 and 30.

Sales typically pick up before Chinese New Year; the area typically experiences increased footfall during this period as it is frequented by people shopping for Chinese New Year goods.

Some hawkers said the temporary closure will allow them to take a break as most working at the hawker centre operate six days a week.

It was reported that hawkers still see brisk sales even though the nearby Rochor Centre was slated for demolition in 2018.

Works slated to be carried out

Works slated to be carried out at Albert Centre include improvements in ventilation, retiling and the replacement of tables and stools.
