Two Singaporean men were charged on Jan. 15 for urinating at public areas in MRT stations.

Zhou Hongwei, 57, was charged with urinating in front of the passenger service centre at Potong Pasir MRT station.

He committed the offence on Jan. 13 at about 7:30pm.

This was the third case in a week that made headlines in Singapore.

An SBS Transit staff witnessed him urinating in public and contacted the police.

After Zhou left the station with the police, the staff proceeded to clean the affected area immediately.

Zhou is out on bail and is expected to plead guilty on Feb. 26.

The second man, Soo Fook Khan, 53, was charged with urinating on the platform of Tanah Merah MRT station.

He committed the offence on Jan. 8, at around 12:30pm.

Soo's actions were captured on video and uploaded to social media on Jan. 13.

In addition, Soo is facing a second separate charge, reported CNA.

He allegedly harassed a borrower on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender in October 2024 by pouring ashes from a prayer urn.

He also allegedly used the urn to knock on a flat's door.

Three cases in a week

Zhou and Soo's day in court came just one day after a Chinese national was fined S$2,000 for a similar offence, committed at Outram Park MRT station.

Three cases of public urination at MRT stations have surfaced within the past week.

The incidents have earned a strongly-worded condemnation from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and reminders from rail operators SBS Transit and SMRT that such behaviour poses health and sanitation risks.

Those found guilty of committing a public nuisance may be fined up to S$2,000.

The penalty may include a jail sentence of up to three months if the offender knew the act would cause injury, danger, or annoyance.
