More streets in Singapore are poised to become more pedestrian-friendly by 2026.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Jan. 14 that 10 streets across the island will be converted into "Friendly Streets", with construction starting in the first half of 2025.

Here's the list of 10 streets that were chosen, after consultation with stakeholders and residents, for the project:

LTA will implement features that make commuting easier for cyclists and pedestrians, especially seniors and young children.

For pedestrians, this entails barrier-free crossings, longer green man crossing times, and raised zebra crossings that make pedestrians more visible to drivers.

Barrier-free crossings that make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road.

Other features are aimed at slowing down vehicles.

They include green-coloured road surfaces that remind drivers to slow down, and the addition of road humps.

Green road markings will remind drivers to slow down.

"Friendly Streets" first introduced in 2023

LTA also announced that the pilots for "Friendly Streets" received positive responses, with nine in 10 agreeing that their walking and cycling experiences have improved.

The pilots were first introduced 2023 in five towns: Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Batok West, Tampines, Toa Payoh and West Coast.

With the exception of Tampines, the pilots in all the towns have been completed.

The "Friendly Streets" initiative was conceived to make existing roads more inclusive and conducive for walking and cycling, and create a safer environment for seniors and young children.

It also ties in with the agency's efforts to make Singapore's roads less vehicle-centric.
