Police in Thailand uses pushcart to transport drunk tourists back to hostel
The police officer, a father of three, thought about the girls' parents back home and felt compelled to ensure their safety.
Koh Phi Phi, an island in Krabi, Thailand, is well known for its lively party scene.
Now, it has gained recognition for something else — kindness.
This was after a Thai police officer received praise for safely escorting two young women back to their hostel on a pushcart on Nov. 29
According to UK media Telegraph, 23-year-old German tourist Sina Baumann and her 19-year-old Australian friend, Tahli Benson, were found passed out at a nearby bar by the beach after binge drinking.
Other partygoers attempted to wake the two tourists, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
It was at that point that Sergeant Major Saneg Jualaong stepped in to assist.
He spotted the two tourists while patrolling the area and came to their aid as he felt it was not safe to leave them alone, as reported by Metro.
Sergeant borrowed pushcart to send girls back to their hostel
The father of three went to a shop on a nearby pier and requested to borrow a pushcart in order to transport the two women back to their accommodation.
The officer was accompanied by several male tourists, who appeared to be friends of the two women.
Baumann and Benson remained completely unconscious throughout the wheeled ride back to their hostel.
The entire event was captured in a heartwarming and entertaining video.
As the group moved along, one of the men walking ahead of the officer was heard making beeping sounds, appearing to clear the way for him.
According to the video, several onlookers watched the event with amusement.
After arriving at the hostel, the duo's friends safely helped them into their bunk beds, while the sergeant placed blankets over the two girls.
Officer expressed his fatherly concern
After ensuring the women's safety, the officer said, "I know what it’s like to have a daughter and how much we worry about them. I thought about their parents back at home."
He added, "They were both too drunk to speak and too drunk to stand up. In that condition, they could have an accident, such as falling into the sea or falling down steps. I made sure they returned safely to their beds."
Police Colonel Surasak Jaidee, the superintendent of the Koh Phi Phi Police Station, explained why a trolley was used.
"All the paths on Koh Phi Phi are pedestrian-only, so a car wasn’t an option."
He also pointed out that motorcycles were not suitable for transporting unconscious individuals.
The colonel shared that this was not the first time the police had helped drunk tourists.
According to a Facebook post, the police officers are duty-bound, as outlined in the "You Drink, I Drive" initiative by Koh Phi Phi Police Station, to assist intoxicated tourists who are unable to return to their accommodation on their own.
"We’ve been doing this for over two years," he added.
"We know people come here to have fun, and we’re not here to punish them. It's better that we’re around to assist and keep them safe."
