S'porean woman & only child, 21, dies in motorcycle crash after surprise visit to parents in M'sia
She had just completed her studies and was looking for a job.
A loving daughter decided to surprise her parents by visiting them in Genting during their trip.
Just four hours after their reunion, she was set to return home to Singapore.
However, that would be the last time her parents saw her.
21-year-old Singaporean Alssa Lyn Tay died on Dec. 10 after being involved in a motorcycle crash along the North-South Expressway in Johor, Malaysia at about 9:15am.
According to The Star, Tay was riding as a pillion passenger when her 23-year-old boyfriend lost control of his motorcycle and collided with road barriers.
Tay was pronounced dead at the scene while her boyfriend sustained leg injuries.
Funeral
Tay, the only child of her mother and stepfather, had planned a surprise visit to Genting.
Her stepfather, surnamed Xu, told Shin Min Daily News that he and his wife had arrived in Genting for a trip earlier.
On Dec. 9, Tay called to tell them she would be joining them. She had just received her new passport and was eager to see her mother.
“I tried to persuade her not to ride the motorcycle up here, but she insisted on coming to see her mother,” Xu said.
Took the motorcycle up
Tay and her boyfriend arrived in Genting at around 1 am on Dec. 10, having taken the motorcycle.
The family spent about four hours together before the young couple left to return to Singapore around 5 am.
Tay's boyfriend had a meeting early that morning, and despite her parents' suggestion that she stay and return with them by car, she decided to leave with him.
Cheerful girl
Tay had recently graduated from Kaplan, a private education institution, with a degree in business studies.
She had been actively looking for a job and was described by her stepfather as a cheerful young woman with many friends.
"She had great relationships with everyone," Xu said. "Her friends all came to see her after hearing the news."
Tay and her boyfriend had been dating for about three months, having met outside of school.
Boyfriend was injured and apologised at the funeral
Relatives and friends gathered at the funeral, where a motorcycle was placed near the hall possibly as a tribute.
The boyfriend, who was injured in the crash, attended the funeral in a wheelchair to apologise to the family.
After the accident, he was taken to Temenggong Seri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim Hospital in Kulai, Johor, where he was treated for a broken leg before returning to Singapore for further care.
When approached by Shin Min reporters, he declined to speak.
"He just said sorry to us," Xu said, sighing as he added that things had already happened and could not be changed.
Tay’s body is set to be cremated at the Mandai Crematorium on Dec. 14.
