If you're an adventurous eater looking for a new snack on the market, look no further.
InsectYumz, which brands itself as an "edible insect brand", has launched packed mealworms.
Each 25g snack pack costs S$4.90 and is currently available at Sheng Siong supermarkets.
Here's a look at the back of the packaging; the ingredient list simply states "dried mealworms".
Here's a look inside the package:
A spokesperson from Insect Food Pte Ltd, which produces InsectYumz, told Mothership that InsectYumz's mealworms are subjected to "sufficient heat treatment" which kills pathogens, making it fit for human consumption.
In addition, these insects are not caught from the wild. They are farmed and processed according to regulatory and food safety standards. Importantly, they are also approved by SFA for import and sale.
InsectYumz Mealworms come in Original Flavour, which means that there is no additional flavouring added.
By themselves, the dried mealworms possess a "mild nutty flavour", said the spokesperson.
Other grubs coming soon
More edible insects are coming to the market in the near future.
While the spokesperson did not provide a definitive date, consumers can look forward to Tom Yum Crickets hitting the shelves in January 2025.
Beyond that, other products like Frozen Silkworms, Frozen Locusts, White Grub snacks, and Honeybee snacks will be available in the "upcoming months ahead".
The brand is also expecting to stock its products at other supermarket chains like Cold Storage and FairPrice soon.
The company said that it took about six months to bring the product to market.
As of July this year, SFA approved the import, sale, and manufacturing of selected insects for consumption.
Since then, Insect Food Pte Ltd has been supplying edible insects to restaurants and schools.
