Man sees wife with lover on secret camera, rushes home to slash him 7 times in Tiong Bahru flat, gets jail
He was arrested at his workplace the next day.
To catch his wife in the act of having an affair, a man set up a camera feed in their bedroom to monitor her.
When he caught her in bed with another man, he rushed home to their Tiong Bahru flat and — in a fit of anger — attacked the other man with a kitchen knife, slashing him six or seven times.
Nguyen Van Thao, 29, was sentenced on Dec. 6 to 60 weeks' jail for one count of voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon, and one count of mischief.
Caught in the act
According to Shin Min Daily News, Nguyen had suspected his wife of being unfaithful to him.
He secretly installed a camera in their bedroom so he could monitor the 30-year-old woman through his mobile phone.
On Jul. 31 at around 7am, his wife invited her lover — a 28-year-old man — to their home at Block 38 Beo Crescent.
Nguyen had just arrived at his office when he saw his wife cuddling with the other man through the camera feed on his phone, the court heard.
In a fit of anger, he rushed home and beelined for the kitchen, where he armed himself with an 18cm-long kitchen knife.
With the knife in one hand and his phone in another, he opened the door to the bedroom, and caught the pair in bed together.
Attacked the man
Nguyen began to record the scene with his phone as "evidence".
He hit the man on the arm with the knife's blade and asked, in Mandarin: "Who are you?"
When the man remained silent, Nguyen hit him a few more times with the blade and asked him to kneel on the bed.
The man tried to apologise, but fell silent again when Nguyen began to question him about how long the affair had been going on for.
Furious, Nguyen attacked the man, slashing him six or seven times with the knife.
The injured man managed to escape into a stairwell, where he remained until he was discovered by a member of the public, who called the police.
He suffered injuries to both hands and will need about a year to fully recover, the court heard.
Cut and threw away man's documents
After the man fled, Nguyen went through the man's possessions and found an identity card, credit card, driver's licence, work permit, and other documents.
He cut the cards and documents in half and threw them down the rubbish chute.
The next day, he returned to work as usual, and was arrested at his office.
The deputy public prosecutor noted that not only was the victim unable to defend himself, Nguyen also damaged many of his personal documents.
He was eventually sentenced to 60 weeks' jail.
For voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon, he could have been jailed up to seven years, fined, caned, or both.
For committing mischief, he could have been jailed up to two years, fined, or both.
