Man, 23, arrested for allegedly stealing S$3,400 of cash from Telok Ayer restaurant
He will be charged on Dec. 6 with the offence of housebreaking and theft.
A 23-year-old man was arrested after allegedly stealing S$3,400 in cash from a restaurant along Telok Ayer Street on Dec. 3 night.
Mothership understands that the alleged housebreaking and theft took place at Shinrai, a Japanese restaurant and bar.
Actions caught on CCTV camera
The man's actions were caught by a CCTV camera at the restaurant.
The footage was subsequently uploaded to Instagram by Shinrai's founder Naomi Neo.
In the video, the man, who was carrying a crossbody bag, could be seen opening a cash register machine at the restaurant.
Upon taking out a stack of cash, the man placed it in his bag.
In the video caption, Neo stated that the man was wearing gloves throughout.
Aftermath
Neo also published two Instagram stories showing the aftermath of the incident.
In one of the stories, a section of the cash register where Shinrai kept S$100 notes had been emptied.
A door knob at the restaurant was also found damaged.
Police officers could be seen conducting investigations at the restaurant after the incident.
Arrested within 24 hours
In a Dec. 5 news release, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed they were alerted to the incident at around 10:20pm on Dec. 3.
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police as well as CCTV cameras, officers from the Central Police Division established the man's identity and arrested him on Dec. 4.
Cash amounting to S$2,400 was recovered.
The man will be charged in court on Dec. 6 with the offence of housebreaking and theft.
The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.
