Motorcyclist, 58, dies after cement block falls from lorry along AYE, driver arrested
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 58-year-old male motorcyclist died along the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) on the morning of Dec. 28.
A loose cement block at the back of the lorry had fallen off, apparently hitting the motorcyclist who was riding behind the vehicle.
In response to queries from Mothership, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that they were alerted to an accident at 11:30am.
The male motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic, said police.
The lorry driver, a 46-year-old male, has been arrested for causing death by negligent act.
What happened
A cyclist surnamed Hu (transliteration) who was near the scene when the accident occurred, told Shin Min Daily News she had heard a loud noise while crossing a bridge over the AYE, and decided to stop and check.
Upon closer inspection, she saw a large concrete block on the expressway, an overturned motorcycle, and a lorry which had stopped a few metres ahead.
A similar cement block could be seen on the truck.
However, her view of the scene was obstructed and she was unable to see the motorcyclist.
She called the police.
Hu said emergency services arrived, and a group of medical personnel could be seen assessing the situation.
However, they were not seen lifting the motorcyclist into the ambulance.
A blue tent was placed on the road shortly after.
Police investigations are ongoing.
