Stefan Liau, chef-owner of modern European restaurant Hevel, passed away at 33.

Before opening his restaurant at Keong Saik Road in November 2023, Liau was the head chef of Mandala Club and had worked at Michelin-starred restaurants in Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

A devoted husband & kind mentor

Liau was married early this year.

He had posted a photo of his wedding on Jan. 31, 2024, on his personal Instagram account with his wife Claresta Harlis.

In an interview with Shin Min, Harlis described him as a devoted husband and a perfectionist who would spend all his energy and effort on his work.

Despite that, after work, he would always return home and cook for her.

"Seeing so many friends coming to mourn my husband, I realised that the last time we were all together was at our wedding," she said, holding back tears.

"No words can express how heartbroken we are by the sudden passing of Chef Stefan Liau," said Hevel in a tribute to him on their Instagram page.

"Stefan was a kind mentor, a devoted husband, and a close friend who touched countless lives with his warmth, creativity and genuine love for those around him," the restaurant added.

"The Hevel family is focused on supporting each other and, most importantly, Claresta and the Liau family as we grieve Stefan's passing," they said.
