2 cats suspected to be mutilated by abuser at M'sian university, police say wild dogs responsible
The cats' limbs appeared to have been very neatly severed, fuelling suspicions of abuse.
Two cats were found on separate occasions with severed limbs and their bodies split open at a university in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The suspected cases of brutal cat killings at Universiti Malaya (UM) went viral on social media, particularly on Xiaohongshu, with many netizens expressing shock at how such an incident could occur at a top university in Malaysia.
The incidents occurred on Dec. 12 and Dec. 16.
According to a post by the UM student union shared on Dec. 17, one cat was found on the first floor of the faculty building, while the other was discovered on a nearby lawn.
Student union shared incident on Facebook
According to the student union, the cats were allegedly found with their limbs seemingly "intentionally disfigured", leading many to believe the injuries were caused by a human.
The union described the incidents as "horrifying and unacceptable".
They also stated that they are working closely with the university's management to conduct a thorough investigation and hold those responsible accountable.
First cat dismembered
The first cat was found dismembered on Dec. 12, and a photo of the tabby was circulated on Xiaohongshu.
This first incident was not initially suspected to be caused by a human.
The user who posted the photo said the student union and professors believed a wild dog caused the injuries.
According to many students, this cat was dearly beloved for its habit of accompanying them to class and will be greatly missed.
Second kitten found dismembered a few days later
Four days later, a second cat was discovered with its stomach cut open and its limbs and tail severed.
A user, likely a university student, also posted a photo on Xiaohongshu, expressing her anger over the incident.
The user shared that the kitten was well-behaved and was often seen by her circle of friends.
She noted that its hands and feet were neatly cut off, and the body was dumped by the roadside, where many would see it.
According to the user, a group of students later buried the cat under a tree.
Students suspect cats were killed by an animal abuser
The discovery of the second injured cat sparked anger among students on social media, who believed the two incidents were connected and carried out by the same abuser.
Netizens believed that the recurrence of the incident in such close proximity suggested it was the work of a human, especially since the cats' limbs appeared to have been very neatly severed.
The person who posted the second cat's photo also said no bite marks were found on the kitten.
Police: Cats were attacked by wild dogs
Representatives from the Student Union filed a police report on Dec. 16, according to 8TV News.
On Dec. 17 around 4pm, the police, accompanied by the Kuala Lumpur City Council's (DBKL) veterinary unit, visited the campus to investigate the incident.
The district's police chief reportedly said investigations showed that the cats were attacked by wild dogs in the area.
The report has been referred to the Veterinary Department and UM's management for further action.
